He joined the \u003ci\u003eDallas Times-Herald\u003c\/i\u003e, serving as book editor and editorial page editor before being awarded a Dobie-Paisano fellowship during which he wrote \u003ci\u003eA Personal Country\u003c\/i\u003e. He wrote a column for \u003ci\u003eThe Dallas Morning News\u003c\/i\u003e and wrote more than 22 books. He published numerous articles in \u003ci\u003eThe Atlantic\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eTexas Monthly\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSouthwest Review\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSouthwestern Historical Quarterly\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eNew York Times Book Review\u003c\/i\u003e, and wrote and narrated many television shows for PBS.
