The post's role was to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eprovide goods that were needed by\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe local population to supplement\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe meager resources this harsh\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eland could provide. Canned fruits\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand meats were important articles, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eas were tobacco, knives, and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eammunition. The Natives traded\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esheep hides, wool, woven blankets, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand turquoise-laden silver jewelry for\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egoods from the post. Their jewelry\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoften was provided as collateral, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"pawn\", to pay for purchases. Ralph\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand Julia and daughter Elizabeth Anne were often the only people of their\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"white-person\" race in the entire region.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt was in this environment that this book's author Elizabeth Anne lived\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eher childhood years.
