Walking Among the People

Churches in the United States cannot ignore the largest minority group in the country. Latinos are often seen as a mono-cultural group, yet the differences within the community are significant. Churches that want to serve Latinos need to understand the diversity within the "Latino" category if they are to effectively serve this population. Walking Among the People describes Latino diversity and offers readers practical advice on how to share the good news of the gospel and form communities of faith. The book reviews how Protestants have related to Latinos in the past, lists some of the key resources within the community that strengthen ministry, and describes some of the ways in which Latinos are already serving their own community. There is also a section on ministry to Latino youth and visions of what Latino ministry could be in the future. Walking Among the People describes a way of doing ministry in the Latino community that assumes we serve others in Jesus' name when we walk with them in the midst of their lives and struggles. Juan Francisco Martinez is Professor of Hispanic Studies and Pastoral Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. He has published several books on Latino Protestants in the United States, including Los Protestantes: An Introduction to Latino Protestantism in the United States and Sea la Luz: The Making of Mexican Protestantism in the American Southwest, 1829-1900.
