Descripción

Rodrigo Manrique, Maestre de Santiago, died in November 1487. Upon his death, his son, Jorge Manrique, conceived his Coplas a la muerte de su padre, a poetic elegy where tradition and originality, medieval elements along with others that announce the incipient Renaissance, are combined. They are nothing more than a reflection on life, fame, fortune, and death, under the prism of Christian resignation; but they also end up being a hymn to life in the midst of the 15th-century tradition of death. Inspired by the classical medieval precedents of the genre and in Ecclesiastes, they also contain allusions to the recent history of Castile and even to events in which the author himself may have been present. For all these reasons, it constitutes one of the capital works of Spanish literature and, without a doubt, the best elegiac poem of medieval poetry.
