The Monster Waltz

"El vals de los monstruos by Lola Ancira is a book that yearns to endure, not to run aground in indolence. It does so not through a lethal claw, but in a slow and deliberate way, increasing the readers' astonishment. The monstrous in these stories lies in the interwoven fabric of the atrocious human passions that border on literary universality. Many of the stories are conceived from the anonymity of their characters, because in reality the names are not as important as the actions, which in each case culminate with the coup de grâce typical of Ancira's prose, which at times reminds us of Amparo Dávila, Francisco Tario, Julio Cortázar or even Jorge Luis Borges, due to the enigmas found in each finely crafted denouement. Eleven stories constitute the waltz of monsters that do not have a physical, but a mental deformity, and with that premise they dance in unison without granting us a single moment of solace, because after each piece, the drama will go in crescendo until it suffocates us. We will witness how far they are capable of going to calm their obsessions or to avoid ending up in oblivion which, apparently, for Lola Ancira, is much more painful than the act of dying."
