Mario Benedetti (Uruguay, Paso de los Toros, September 14, 1920 - Montevideo, May 17, 2009) was educated in a German school and earned a living as a stenographer, salesman, cashier, accountant, civil servant, and journalist. He was the author of novels, short stories, poetry, theater, and literary criticism. His work comprises a corpus of more than eighty books, and his talent has been recognized worldwide.
