About the Author
Mario Benedetti (Uruguay, Paso de los Toros, September 14, 1920 - Montevideo, May 17, 2009) was educated in a German school and earned a living as a stenographer, salesman, cashier, accountant, civil servant, and journalist. He was the author of novels, short stories, poetry, theater, and literary criticism. His work comprises a corpus of more than eighty books, and his talent has been recognized worldwide.

In 1953, Quién de nosotros, his first novel, appeared, but it was the short story collection Montevideanos (1959) that established him as a narrator. With his next novel, La tregua (1960), Benedetti gained international projection: the work had more than one hundred and fifty editions, was translated into nineteen languages, and was adapted for film, theater, radio, and television. For political reasons, the author left his country in 1973, beginning a long twelve-year exile that led him to reside in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain, and which gave rise to the subsequent process that he baptized as «desexilio» upon his return. He was awarded, among others, the Reina Sofía Poetry Prize, the José Martí Ibero-American Prize, and the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize.
