«Emil Ferris is one of the most important graphic novel artists of our era. Art Spiegelman Awarded with 2 Ignatz, 3 Eisner, 1 Guinigi, 1 ACBD Gran Prix, 1 Carlos Giménez, 1 Premio de los Libreros de Madrid, 1 Premio del Cómic Aragonés. Award for Best International Comic at the Barcelona International Comic Convention 2019. A comic that has already become a modern classic. This is the story of Karen Reyes, a peculiar ten-year-old girl who lives in the dark Chicago of the late sixties. She keeps a graphic diary that reflects her passion for B-movie horror films and the iconography of pulp monster magazines. She portrays herself as a wolf-girl dressed as a detective and, as such, one day sets out to solve the mystery surrounding the murder of her beautiful and enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a Holocaust survivor.
As Karen investigates the crime, we see the fascinating and interconnected lives of everyone around her: her brother Deeze, whose enlistment in Vietnam is imminent and who is tormented by a secret from the past; her mother Marvela, an unpredictable woman who has raised a partially dysfunctional family; Sam Silverberg, "the Quick," a jazz drummer recently widowed; Mr. Gronan, the building's landlord and part-time mobster; Sylvia Gronan, his wife and keeper of community secrets; Mr. Chugg, a ventriloquist with strange customs; and Karen's strange and moving catalog of friends, equally real and unreal.
When Karen's investigations branch out to Nazi Germany, it will become clear how the personal and the political, the past and the present, can converge, and how even good can harbor a portion of the monstrous.
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is an unprecedented narrative explosion that has already elevated its author among the great contemporary masters of comics.
