Descripción

The new and impactful book by the acclaimed author of Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982, the publishing phenomenon with 1,500,000 readers, National Book Award finalist.

«A collection of stories rich in local color that reflects on her previous feminist novel, which shook South Korean society, and on the generational changes of her compatriots. -- The Guardian

«Alongside other socially critical narratives emerging from Korea, such as Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning Parasite, her books could change history. -- The Guardian

The eight women who star in these stories are of very different ages, but all face great challenges: the sexism that surrounds them daily, the family that silences them, the work environment that discriminates against them, inconsistent friendships or the unstoppable passage of time. In the background of each of these stories lurks the idea that any of them could be interchangeable with another, thus annihilating all forms of female individuality and turning them all into an anonymous Miss Kim, the most common surname in the country: a ghostly and omnipresent character who carries all the injustices that weigh on women in contemporary society.

Miss Kim Knows sketches a feminist fresco of South Korea through the masterful and sharp prose of Cho Nam-joo, whom critics already consider a benchmark in the women's struggle and the most important voice to emerge in Asia in recent years.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

FROM THE AUTHOR OF KIM JIYOUNG, BORN 1982

"There is laughter and joy to be found in these pages, along with the kind of laughter that sets two women over 50 rolling in the snow with tears streaming down their frozen cheeks and the aurora borealis dancing above them." -- The Observer

"A thought-provoking, nuanced read" -- Sarah Manning, Red

"Dazzling prose" -- Elle

Eight women. Eight stories. One reality.

A woman is born. A woman is filmed in public without consent. A woman suffers domestic violence. A woman is gaslit. A woman is discriminated against at work. A woman grows old. A woman becomes famous. A woman is hated, and loved, and then hated again.

Written in Cho Nam-Joo's masterful, razor-sharp prose, Miss Kim Knows brings together the lives of eight Korean women, aged 10 to 80. Contained in each of these biographies is a microcosm of contemporary Korea, and the challenges and injustices that women face from childhood to old age. As with Kim Jiyoung, born 1982, the fates of these eight women are the fates of women the world over. And under Cho Nam-Joo's precise, unveiled gaze, nothing and nobody escapes scrutiny--not even herself.
