La incursión de McCook y la batalla de Brown's Mill

A finales de julio de 1864, William Tecumseh Sherman envió dos grandes fuerzas de caballería bajo el mando de Edward McCook y George Stoneman al sur de Atlanta para destruir el ferrocarril Macon & Western. En su camino, McCook destruyó la infraestructura ferroviaria en Palmetto, Fayetteville y Lovejoy's Station. Se suponía que McCook se encontraría con Stoneman en Lovejoy's, pero Stoneman nunca apareció. McCook se vio obligado a retirarse a través de Newnan, perseguido por la caballería bajo el mando de Joseph Wheeler.
