The story of the Bennet sisters features an indolent father, a hysterical and irresponsible mother, the elegant and manly presence of Fitzwilliam Darcy, and a cast of absolutely delightful secondary characters. Today it seems like a small thing, but two hundred years ago all the girls in England learned, with Elizabeth Bennet, to say "no" and have it taken as a "no," not to be dragged along by an absurd mother, not to be intimidated by power, class, or money, to respect themselves and to present themselves to the world with nothing to be ashamed of.
