When a report or investigation on the health of a reinforced concrete structure is requested, it is because safety regarding load-bearing capacity is at risk, or because expectations of in-service durability have decreased. The circumstances that usually motivate the request for a diagnosis of a structure are usually the following: - Suspicion of structural insufficiency upon detecting symptoms or lesions (cracks, deflections, etc.) - Degradation due to lack of protection against environmental conditions (cracking, corrosion, etc.) - Doubts, regarding the current state of the structure, due to having been subjected to extreme conditions (fires, earthquakes, explosions, etc.). - Forecast of an increase in current loads due to reforms and a change of use. In the first three cases, the study of the lesions of each and every one of the components of the structure will be the fundamental tool that allows us to determine the causes and how they affect the structure. In the latter case, dimensions, knowledge of materials and structural recalculation will be the basic tools. Regardless of the case, the diagnosis of a structure requires an orderly methodology in its recognition. This will be divided into stages so that we can advance step by step until reaching final conclusions. The three fundamental stages of any structural investigation process are: 1. Preliminary report or Pre-diagnosis. It consists of a first general recognition of the building and allows establishing a first assessment and the need for a diagnosis of the structure. 2. Preliminary studies or Diagnosis. Study for the knowledge of the structure, collecting the necessary information, through complementary information tests, to determine the state in relation to safety and durability expectations. 3. Diagnosis or final report. The definitive report that, based on what has been studied in the previous stages, allows determining what are the reasons for the structure's illness and how to intervene in it to solve the problem: repair, reinforcement or replacement.
