Descripción

Roberto Luque Escalona was born in Holguín, Cuba, in 1936. The youngest son of a middle-class, rather upper-class, family, he graduated from high school at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Holguín. He enrolled in Law at the University of Havana, but barely attended classes as the University closed due to the political circumstances of the time. His family sent him to study in the United States, but in Miami, he changed course. He went to Mexico and joined an expedition being prepared by the 26th of July Movement. The expedition failed and when Batista fell, he decided to stay in Mexico and enrolled in History at the National Autonomous University (UNAM). He left his studies unfinished and returned to Cuba. He enrolled in Political Science at the University of Havana, where he graduated in 1964. In 1970, while working at the Prensa Latina News Agency, he submitted a novel to the Casa de Las Américas Contest, which was labeled as counter-revolutionary. After being expelled from Prensa Latina, he worked for an economic magazine as a style corrector. He was also expelled from that job when he joined the Cuban Committee for Human Rights. In 1990, he published a brief history of Cuba in Mexico, which was actually a diatribe against Fidel Castro. He titled that book LOS NIÑOS Y EL TIGRE (THE CHILDREN AND THE TIGER). In 1992, he went into exile. In exile, he has published three editions of that book, written in Cuba, one of them in English. Also an essay on Cuban Myths and eight novels.

Gastón Baquero commented on the first edition of YO EL MEJOR DE TODOS (I THE BEST OF ALL): This book, wonderfully written by Roberto Luque Escalona. The author wrote that first edition when he was still living under the totalitarian regime in Cuba. Some parts of this second edition have been suppressed, others corrected, and it has also been expanded. I don't believe Baquero's enthusiasm was founded on them, nor would he miss them, if he were alive and able to read this second version. The book is a very complete study of the life of Che Guevara from his birth in Argentina to his death in Bolivia. It covers all his adventures through Central America, his initial relationship with Fidel Castro, the Sierra Maestra, the triumph of the Revolution, the struggles in Africa, and the end of the guerrilla, abandoned by Castro, in Bolivia.
