Cather publicó Youth and the Bright Medusa, una colección de sus cuentos, en 1920. Según Alfred Knopf, Cather no estaba contenta con las aburridas cubiertas marrones de O Pioneers! y My Antonia y al ver la tela china de color azul brillante que Knopf había comprado para cubrir otras tapas duras, le entregó inmediatamente el manuscrito de Youth and the Bright Medusa. También según Knopf, a Willa Cather no le importaba cuánto le pagarían por su trabajo, sino la fama y la atención positiva.
