There is a term known as 'The rule of the road' which basically determines whether the traffic in your country travels on the left or the right side of the road. It is a fundamental system for keeping opposing traffic flows apart and therefore hopefully safe when properly adhered to. The following facts may be of interest to the reader. 1. Around 65% of the world's population drives on the right - right hand traffic. 2. Almost 90% of the world's total road distance uses the right - right hand traffic. 3. Approximately 180 countries drive on the right - right hand traffic. This book has been prepared to help all those trainee drivers who fit into any or all of these categories. The book 'Basic Lessons for Trainee Drivers' has been prepared primarily to help trainee drivers follow a structured series of driving lessons in preparation for taking their practical driving test. It follows a logical and ordered system for driver training which used in conjunction with practical driving lessons will prepare the candidate well for their practical driving test. The basic principles of learning to drive and safe driving are fairly standard throughout the world, as are most road signs, markings and directions. Most countries have signed up to the convention in this respect. However there may be minor local variations, all of which cannot possibly be covered in a worldwide publication of this nature. It follows therefore that whilst this book will be an invaluable asset to trainee drivers the onus is on them to check out any local variants which may apply to the country in which they live and drive. In its' various sections it includes the following. 1. Twelve complete and fully illustrated lesson plans covering the basic elements which are assessed during most practical driving tests. 2. A total of almost 150 full color illustrations each of which focuses in detail on the subheadings in the various lesson plans. For the sake of conformity and clarification the blue car in every image is always the trainee vehicle. 3. A guide to the most commonly experienced driving faults committed by learners allowing them to be more aware of the pitfalls and to help with self assessment. 4. A multiple choice Question & Answer section (complete with answers) enabling you to check just how much you have learned. The lesson plans have been set out in a general logical order with a view to taking you through from novice to test standard and beyond. However, the order in which the plans are presented and the subject matter contained therein should be adapted to meet your own needs. You may for example have already taken a number of lessons and are struggling in one particular area. Or you may indeed have already taken a test and failed on one or more of the specific elements. In either case a study of this book will undoubtedly help. This book is designed to help you understand what is expected of a trainee driver and whilst it will be an invaluable asset in the learning process there is no substitute for practical driving lessons with a qualified instructor. This book is priced similar to that of a practical driving lesson, but it will be money well spent. You will learn quicker. You will need fewer lessons. It will save you money. Good luck with your lessons and Drive Safely.

JIM DUGGAN spent many years in the driver training business both as a first class driving instructor and latterly involved in the training of instructors. With a pass rate of 78% at a time when the general pass rate was only 32% he has a proven track record which served his pupils well. He has estimated having driven well over one million miles since passing his test in 1965 and with all the experience that gives an astute observer he has a wealth of knowledge to pass on to trainee drivers. Having now retired from the practical side of the business he has prepared this book which has a simple straightforward approach to learning to drive which pupils should find an invaluable supplement to their practical lessons. This first publication was written for all those countries which drive on the left, but he quickly realized that in fact there are a greater number of countries which drive on the right and that a book written specifically for that orientation was required. So here it is - 'Basic Lessons for Trainee Drivers'. The print version. Also available as an E-book. Good luck with your lessons and DRIVE SAFELY.
