Originally the Bernese Mountain dog was used on farms in canton Bern as guard and draft dog and cattle. They called DĂŒrrbĂ€chler the name of the hamlet and of the inn of Durbach near Riggisberg in the Canton of Berne. It was a tricolor dog widespread long hair. In 1902, 1904 and 1907, the finest specimens were presented in dog show. In 1907 breeders Burgdorf (Burgdorf) decided to promote the breed through the Swiss club DĂŒrbĂ€chler. In 1910, like other dog breeds in the Swiss mountains, it is renamed and became the Bernese Mountain Dog. Like all bigs dogs their ancestor is the Tibetan Mastiff adopted by ancient Rome before spreading to Europe in the wake of the Roman legions. It is from this dog that has grown dog Swiss shepherd, defined as "rescue dog". Today they are also used as guide dogs and dogs as civil protection.
