About the Author
John Gastil is a professor in Communication Arts and Sciences and Political Science at the Pennsylvania State University, where he also directs the McCourtney Institute for Democracy. He specializes in political deliberation and group decision making, particularly within small groups of lay citizens. His work on the Oregon (USA) Citizens' Initiative Review has helped evaluate an exciting new form of public deliberation that should improve initiative elections. His project on the Jury and Democracy has investigated, and helped to vindicate, the jury system as a valuable civic educational institution. His other books include The Jury and Democracy (2010), The Group in Society (2010), Political Communication and Deliberation (2008), and By Popular Demand: Revitalizing Representative Democracy through Deliberative Elections (2000). His edited books include The Australian Citizens' Parliament and the Future of Deliberative Democracy (2013), Democracy in Motion: Evaluating the Practice and Impact of Deliberative Civic Engagement (2012), and the Deliberative Democracy Handbook (2005).
