About the Author
John Shipley Tilley was born in Conyers, Georgia in 1880. He earned his M.A. at Harvard and went on to become a successful attorney in Alabama. The grandson of a Confederate veteran, Tilley was a strong defender of the Southern cause, authoring two other books on the subject of the War Between the States: Lincoln Takes Command, which examines the historical details behind the Fort Sumter affair, and The Coming of the Glory, a study of the history of slavery in the United States, State sovereignty and the right of secession, and the events of the War and Reconstruction. He passed away in Montgomery, Alabama in 1968.
