About the Author
Dr. Slobodan Cuk Dr. Cuk received his Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree from Belgrade University, Yugoslavia in 1970 specializing in Nuclear Engineering and Control Systems. He came to the United States in 1972 and in 1973 completed a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University sponsored by NASA. MSEE thesis: Stability Investigation of the Spinning Skylab. In 1974 he worked for MEMOREX on design of disk-drive controls. From 1974 to 1976 he completed at Caltech his PhD thesis: Modelling, Analysis and Design of Switching Converters sponsored by NASA. In August 1979 Prof. Cuk founded Optimum Power Conversion, Inc., a California corporation, (dba TESLAco) with Prof. R.D. Middlebrook. TESLAco designed hybrid DC-DC Cuk converter modules for the ORION spacecraft on a project for Honeywell and NASA. The first test flight was carried successfully in December 2014 with a manned mission to Mars scheduled for 2030. For Boeing Electronics Company TESLAco developed Cuk converters used on F-22 aircraft. From June 1977 and until December 1999, Dr. Cuk was Professor at Caltech where he taught courses in Power Electronics and advised 35 PhD students Dozen of his students are now Professors of Power Electronics in US and worldwide. For the invention of Integrated Magnetics and the Cuk converter, Prof. Cuk and Prof. Middlebrook received 1991 Medal from Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Dr. Cuk's publications include over 150 scientific papers. The original two volumes paperback edition published by TESLAco in 1981 was used as a first introduction to Power Electronics by many engineers and by over 4,000 engineers who attended Dr. Cuk's public courses worldwide. New Hybrid, Storageless and PWM/Resonant Switching Methods pioneered by Dr. Cuk have already resulted in two dozen novel converter topologies covered by US and worldwide patents. Dr. Cuk's key inventions are: Optimum Topology Converter, known as the Cuk converter (1974) Coupled-Inductor and Integrated Magnetics Methods (1975) State-space Averaging Method (1975). Tesla Converter (2000) Hybrid and Storageless Switching Methods (2009) Bridgeless AC-DC converters with PFC and Isolation (2010) Isolated Cuk-Boost Converter (2012) Cuk-buck 2 Converter (2013) Single-Phase and Three- Phase Cuk-rectifier (2014) Rapid, On-Board Cuk-Charger for Electric Vehicles (2015) PWM-Resonant Switching Method (2015)
