Description
The name 'Fox Terrier' refers to two different breeds of terrier type dog: the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. Both of these breeds originated in the 19th century from a handful of British Terriers and are related to the modern white terrier breeds. Both types of Fox Terrier have a mostly white coat with different colored markings - the breed's coat colorations and coat texture is the main difference that separates both the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. The Fox Terrier was originally kept with packs of English Foxhounds and were bred and developed specifically for the purpose of flushing foxes out of their dens during hunts. The Fox Terrier originally had relatively small legs, but as the general pace of the hunt became faster the Fox Terrier began to be bred with longer legs which allowed them to keep up during the hunt. However it got to the point where the Fox Terrier became too large to be used for its original purpose, and its use in hunts began to decline.
