About the Author
Heather Heaton, a Pacific Northwest-based environmental writer and photographer, worked as an interpretive naturalist and a multimedia specialist for the US National Forests and New Zealand's Mount Tongariro National Park for several years. Her assignments led her to write on natural and cultural history, including volcanic eruptions, forest fires, old growth forests, and Native American and New Zealand Maori cultures. Both her written and photographic works have appeared in a variety of environmental and cultural publications including: Cultural Survival Magazine, California's Eldorado National Forest's The Nugget, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument's interactive guide, and Southern Connecticut State University's The Seed. If you find yourself hiking in the Pacific Northwest, you may come across one of a wide range of interpretive trail signs she has written. Following her Master's degree in Science Education and Environmental Studies, her interest to highlight unique landscapes within US National Forests began to take shape. This is book one in her Secret Life Series. The others include The Secret Life of Mono Lake and The Secret Life of Mount St. Helens. You can also view her documentary photography at http: //www.heatherheaton.photos. She lives with her husband, Olaf, and their Labrador retriever, Zoe in Portland, Oregon.
