Twenty Fourth Illinois Infantry Regiment

This is the Civil War story of the 24th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the men who made up this fine regiment. It is the story of leaders in the German and Hungarian Revolutions of 1848 who came together as officers and men of this unit to fight and die for the preservation of their newly adopted country, against slavery, and for the unification of their adopted nation. It was embroiled in a near mutiny, attempted murder, and the sacking of an Alabama town that resulted in the court martial of the regiment and brigade commanders. Division commanders mentioned the 24th as having saved the Union's left line from being over-run at Perryville. They captured the strategically important bridge over the Tennessee River at Decatur, Alabama; was the lead regiment in the capture of Huntsville, Alabama; and played an important role in repulsing the Confederate charge on the Union's left at the Battle of Chickamauga. They traveled and campaigned in Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama and fought hard in the battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Tunnel Hill, Resaca, and Kennesaw Mountain.

About the Author
Ray Burhop is a graduate of the University of Illinois and has lived in Florida for thirty years. Prior residences were in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He served as a Project Engineer for a large manufacturing corporation. Upon early retirement he became the President of Burhop Associates, Inc. a project engineering consulting company for the packaging industry. Interest in the Civil War has been strong since childhood. When father-in-law said. "My Grandfather's brother was in the Civil War. He was quite the hero in that war. After the war, he went out west, and the family never heard from him again." His father-in-law had one other piece of information. He had a copy of a Company Muster Roll showing Paul Vogel was a private in the Twenty-Fourth Illinois Infantry Regiment. This was all there was - a name and a regiment. Having started some work on genealogy, Ray began to do some detective work on Paul Vogel and the 24th Ill Regiment. One thing led to another. The more he learned about Paul Vogel, the more he learned of the 24th and it's amazing history. Finally, he had to conclude the story of the Twenty-Fourth Illinois Infantry Regiment had to be told. Research over a fifteen year period led to trips to battlefields where the 24th fought and to research in libraries, museums, archives, towns and cities in Utah, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, Tennessee, Nevada, Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri, Virginia and Washington DC. Exploration of cemeteries, review of official and personal documents, reenactments, interviews, local, state and federal government resources and effective use of the internet system were all very valuable tools in this search of the 24th.
