Description

Unlike more popular works like the Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy is lesser-known and often perplexing. Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra take readers on adventures through the heavens; That Hideous Strength delves deep into topics much closer to home. In the process, these books allude to everything from H. G. Wells and the World Wars to Medieval cosmology and Arthurian Legend; therefore, there is much to be gained from an introduction to Lewis's broad and eclectic interests.

Written to be accessible and useful to fans and scholars alike, A Compass for Deep Heaven provides the background information, historical context, and literary insight readers need to navigate the cosmos of Lewis's science fiction. It does not merely inform; it shows how these contexts clarify key messages and reveal the real-world warnings hidden there.

About the Author

Diana Pavlac Glyer (Ph.D. English) teaches in the Honors College at APU. She discovered C. S. Lewis when she was in high school, and she has been reading his books and writing about him ever since. Best known for two books about the Inklings (Bandersnatch and The Company They Keep), Dr. Glyer feels honored to have spent this past year working alongside these extraordinary scholars.

Julianne Johnson (B.A. in English and Honors Humanities) fell in love with literature at a young age and hasn't stopped reading since. She has been greatly inspired by the work of C. S. Lewis--especially his ideas about imagination and the creative process. Her goal in life is to write stories that will inspire children and young adults to love literature and discover their faith. Outside of her literary pursuits, Julianne enjoys exploring the outdoors, cre-ating art, and ice skating.

S. L. Jensen (B.A. in Political Science and Honors Humanities) grew up reading Lewis in the form of The Chronicles of Narnia. She first was introduced to the Trilogy in high school but was not a fan. After revisiting it, she grew to love the stories and was excited to be a part of this project. Her love of reading goes beyond Lewis, and she had a penchant for reading all types of fiction. When not reading, she enjoys taking very amateur photographs and spend-ing time with her three dogs.
