A great book can be transformative—altering our thought processes, serving as a moral compass, or giving us a much-needed boost. Each of us likely has at least one book that has radically shaped our lives. For those who have experienced this transformation, or those seeking it, here are some of the ways books can change an inmate’s life.
Belonging
Reading a book allows us to form a connection with its author and, often, much more than that. The universe within the pages—the characters, themes, and ideas—provides a lifeline to the broader world. Books remind us that we are not alone, allowing us to share in universal dreams and struggles. In this way, books offer a sense of belonging.
Empathy
Like a meaningful conversation, reading involves active listening. Each page places us on the receiving end of the author's insights, theories, emotions, and perspectives. The author is inviting us into their world, hoping we listen carefully. Books strengthen our empathy, helping us connect deeply with people and perspectives outside our own.
Humility
Books can teach us invaluable lessons, often by showing us what to avoid. While lived experience is irreplaceable, many books save us from heartache by imparting essential life skills. Through reading, we can explore different cultures, historical periods, and philosophies that may be entirely foreign to us, expanding our understanding of the world.
Confidence
Reading skills impact all areas of learning, including communication and self-expression. To help inmates build confidence and literacy, we’ve created a Prison Book Club (https://sureshotbooks.com/
