Matthew Gregory Lewis was a British writer, playwright, and politician. He studied at Oxford and toured France, Germany, and the Netherlands in pursuit of Goethe's work, which influenced his first work, The Monk, a gothic work in which he denounced the excesses of the Spanish inquisition.
