Description

Once the turning point of the American Revolution had passed and consecutive American losses meant a loss of morale for soldiers, governments began enticing persons to enlist or reenlist with the U.S. Army in order to continue the fight. Of the states that could offer bounty land, New York set off to offer a generous gratuity of 500 acres to each soldier who served, in addition to the 100 acres offered by the Continental Congress. Although patents were not issued until 1790, many soldiers relinquished their claims because they needed cash. Some others hired attorneys, or a series of attorneys, to receive their patents and/or sell them. Many of the deeds in this book include soldiers' rights who were relinquished for money between 1783 and 1791. Included with these quitclaim deeds are other deeds related to the same lot pertaining to multiple conveyances or transferals, depositions proving the deed (which sometime includes personal knowledge and genealogical information), and also some transcriptions of the soldier's discharge certificates from General Washington. The deeds included here are not the deeds recorded in the New York Secretary of State's office (i.e. the Secretary's Deeds) but are deeds filed in Cayuga and Onondaga County, New York collections. There are also some deeds recorded in Albany County. Additionally, deeds related to those claims reserved for the Canadian and Nova Scotian refugees in Clinton County, New York's first two deed books are included. A full name and place name index is included, as well as some background on the legislation in the introduction. A second volume of these deeds will be forthcoming as more deeds are transcribed from the various filed collections. Please note that these deeds only pertain to soldier gratuities from the New York Line of the U.S. Army, not militia service (i.e. "militia land bounty rights").
