About the Author
Mushabbar A. Syed, MD, FACC, FSCMR is a cardiologist and Rolf & Merian Gunnar Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago. He oversees the multimodality cardiovascular imaging program in addition to fellowship training programs in general cardiology and cardiovascular imaging at Loyola.
He earned his medical degree at King Edward Medical University, Pakistan and completed residencies in internal medicine in Pakistan, United Kingdom and United States. He completed fellowship in cardiology and echocardiography at Henry Ford Hospital; Detroit, USA followed by a clinical and research fellowship in cardiovascular magnetic resonance at the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. His research interests include studying myocardial substrate in patients with arrhythmia using CMR and biomarkers and CMR applications in electrophysiology and heart failure. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance and cardiovascular computed tomography. He is actively involved in the educational programs of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and the American College of Cardiology having served on the program planning committees for ACC & SCMR annual scientific sessions and as chair of the SCMR education committee. He has served on the editorial boards of several medical journals and have co-edited two textbooks on cardiovascular magnetic resonance. He has received several teaching awards and has mentored many students, residents, fellows and junior faculty.Raad Mohiaddin, MB ChB, MSc FRCR FRCP FESC PhD, is a Professor of Cardiovascular Imaging at the National Heart and Lung Institute Imperial College London and Royal Brompton Hospital.
After graduating with a basic medical degree, Professor Mohiaddin began general training in cardiology. Then he decided to pursue an academic career and in 1985 he joined the magnetic resonance unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London UK. He has since been concerned with the development and applications of contemporary cross-sectional imaging techniques in cardiology particularly Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR, MRI). His concern has been to make the best possible use of the functional and anatomical information provided by imaging in understanding cardiovascular diseases and to guide diagnosis and management of patients with these diseases. Prof. Mohiaddin oversees the CMR congenital heart disease service at the Royal Brompton Hospital for many years which has excellent national and international reputation for providing a high quality CMR service in adult and pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. Prof. Mohiaddin is an acknowledged mentor, researcher, and teacher in this field. He was awarded the William S. Moore award of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (USA) twice in 1991 and 1993. This is the Society's highest honour for medical investigators. Other clinical and academic interests include blood flow measurement and blood flow visualization, vascular imaging and assessment of the biophysical properties of the vascular wall, ischaemic and non-ischaemic heart disease, valvular disease and the development of imaging techniques to guide electrophysiological and interventional procedures. Prof. Mohiaddin was an assistant/associate editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance for 20 years and on the editorial board of many medical journals and a referee for several clinical and scientific journals. He has an extensive list of peer-reviewed and invited publications, four published books and has a long list of invited lectures nationally and internationally.
