Bristol, England, 1817. A beautiful young stranger speaking an unknown language is tried for the crime of begging. But when a man claims that he can translate her dialect, it becomes understood that the woman is a princess from an exotic foreign land. She is welcomed by a family of aristocrats interested in using her to increase their prestige. But is Caraboo really a princess?
