Description
Stop Doing What You Don't Want to Do is written by an associate chaplain and Gideon who's met with hundreds of men and women, in and out of jail, who have been addicted to alcohol, drugs, pornography, and criminal behavior. This is a little book (48 pages) filled with big truths, short stories, and practical advice on how to be free of addictions.
The book is not preachy or teachy but tells real stories of real people who have beaten their addictions by going God's way instead of their own way. It is for those who are leading lives on the edge of hopelessness, who have become frustrated with their lack of self-control, and who have broken promise after promise of stopping what they don't want to do. If you are fed up with your life up to this point, it's time to try something different. The only thing you have to lose by reading this book is your addiction.
The title of the book comes from Romans 7, where the Apostle Paul, a Christian at the time, is frustrated that what he wants to do he cannot do, and what he doesn't want to do, that's the very thing he does. In Romans 8, Paul finds peace, joy, and a promising life when he lets Jesus Christ be the master of his life through the power of the Holy Spirit.
But there's more to it than that. Becoming united with Christ is wonderful, but you're missing the boat if you expect Him to help you clean up your messes, as if His purpose is to follow you and do your bidding. Jesus is not in the business of taking your side. He wants to take over your life, and if you let him be the master and you the follower, you can put your addictions in the rear-view mirror forever. Now, how do you do that?
Stop Doing What You Don't Want to Do gives you practical steps to make sure you stay close enough to Jesus that the two or you look like twins. It's not complicated, but you need a path to follow, and this book shows you that path.
