Description
"I went to Princeton because of Bill Bradley, marveled at John Wooden's success at UCLA, suffered as a 76er fan the dominance of Red Auerbach and the Celtics, watched Pete Carril's artistry at Princeton and, more recently while living in Charlottesville, have admired the discipline and commitment that Tony Bennett instills in his teams at Virginia. Until this book, I had not appreciated what linked these men to each other: a devotion to core-values driven leadership. Barnes ably explains in this engaging book what this is and why it matters - in everything from sports to business to politics."

"Many underestimated the impact that Tony Bennett would have on the Virginia Men's Basketball program when he was hired in 2009. Bennett has instilled in his program core-values driven leadership, and TEAMBALL is a wonderful reminder of the foundational significance of his approach. And, while Tony's impact on Virginia Basketball is now well recognized, as a Virginia alum and resident of Charlottesville, I am equally impressed by, and appreciative of, his impact on the entire University and Charlottesville community. Barnes very effectively captures the enduring values of Tony Bennett and other transformational leaders in TEAMBALL."

Barnes Hauptfuhrer is a retired businessman whose career exposed him to the value of teamwork and great leaders, but also highlighted for him the destructive value of poor leadership and lack of teamwork. He attended Princeton University, graduating in 1976, where he won the B.F. Bunn Trophy, awarded to that member of the Princeton Basketball team who in play, sportsmanship, and influence contributed most to the sport. After Princeton, he was drafted in the third round to play in the NBA for the Houston Rockets. Barnes subsequently got a joint JD/MBA degree from the University of Virginia. Post-UVA, he pursued a career in investment banking and private equity until he retired in 2016.
