About the Author
At 22 years old, I had a Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems (computers) and no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I worked in the computer industry for several years but without fulfillment. I returned to school to begin a master's degree in accounting hoping this would excite me. After a year of courses, accounting was not interesting enough to hold my attention. I continued working, all the while wondering what I really wanted to do. I met my husband, who worked for a large medical facility as a physician assistant specializing in pediatric medicine, in 1992. His work piqued my interest and, with his direction and support, I again decided to return to school. As they say, the third time's a charm. In 1994, I was accepted into the Master of Physical Therapy Program at Notre Dame College in Manchester, NH, where I met Patricia Wolfe. Pat was a physical therapist who specialized in women's health issues. She was the head of the Rehabilitation Department at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, a large seacoast area hospital. Pat taught a women's health course during one of my semesters at Notre Dame College. She was fabulous. She exuded knowledge, confidence and passion in her teaching. It truly inspired me. The day I met Pat was the day I finally knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Here was a woman who, in one hour, was able to solidify my niche in PT. That was no small feat. During my early practice as a physical therapist, I began to see more and more problems of incontinence in varying degrees. It was the problem women least wanted to talk about with their physicians. In fact, they never mentioned it unless their physicians asked. Unfortunately, most doctors did not ask. Unsurprisingly, most of the doctors who did ask were usually women. These women needed guidance and support. To help them, I had to learn too. The process was trial and error with some methods more successful than others. This book is a result of all our early efforts. Eighteen years later, I am a physical therapist specializing in women's health issues, just like Pat. My program helped thousands of women; and by making a few simple changes it can change your life too. I still love to help women get their lives back. It is as simple as that. This is what I was meant to do! Leslie M. Parker, MPT, CDT Email: ppods651@gmail.com Phone: 207-703-0255 Website: www.innerbalancept.com
